National park landscapes
Lahemaa
- 1
Lahemaa National Park
Lahemaa is broad enough to show several of northern Estonia’s characteristic landscapes in one region. Forest roads lead to peninsulas and boulder-strewn coast, while bog boardwalks, old villages and restored manor estates create very different stops within short driving distances. It rewards at least a full day because the interest lies in the connections between nature and settlement rather than a single viewpoint. The park also works as a bridge between Tallinn and eastern Estonia, with Rakvere and Ida-Viru easily added to a longer route.

Viru Bog
Viru Bog offers an accessible introduction to one of Estonia’s defining landscapes. The boardwalk leaves the forest and gradually opens onto peatland dotted with pools and stunted pines, making ecological changes visible over a relatively short distance. An observation structure adds height where available, while longer route options continue beyond the central boardwalk. Conditions can be slippery or exposed, so practical footwear matters. The stop fits naturally between Tallinn and the manor estates of Lahemaa without requiring a full wilderness expedition.

Manor estates
Lahemaa
- 1
Palmse Manor
Palmse is one of the best places to see how an Estonian manor operated as a complete estate. The main house provides furnished interiors and family history, while barns, workshops, park structures and landscaped grounds extend the story into everyday management and leisure. Restoration was carried out across much of the ensemble rather than focusing only on the residence. The manor’s location inside Lahemaa makes it easy to compare aristocratic estate culture with nearby forests, bogs and traditional villages on the same day.

Sagadi Manor
Sagadi complements Palmse rather than duplicating it. Its ordered courtyards and long range of estate buildings make the scale of manor administration particularly clear, while museum spaces connect the estate to Lahemaa’s forest history. The architectural ensemble is easy to walk and the open park gives the site a quieter, more rural character. Visiting Sagadi alongside nearby coastal villages or the national park’s woodland routes helps show the close relationship between land ownership, forestry and settlement in northern Estonia.

Medieval stronghold
Rakvere
- 1
Rakvere Castle
Rakvere Castle retains enough walls, towers and courtyards to communicate the scale of a medieval stronghold while still reading clearly as a ruin. Displays and reconstructed activity areas add interpretation, but the most important feature is the fortress itself and its commanding position above the town. The site provides a useful historical step between Lahemaa’s manor estates and the border fortifications of Narva. From the hill, the relationship between the castle, settlement and surrounding landscape is easy to understand.
