Why visit

Berestye Archaeological Museum is worth including for its role as a museum built over exceptionally preserved remains of the medieval town of Berestye. The visit adds a concrete layer to an itinerary centred on Brest, because the architecture, collections or landscape can be understood in its actual regional setting rather than as an isolated name on a map. Its strongest points are excavated timber buildings; artefacts from everyday life; preserved street levels; interpretation of medieval Brest. Together these elements help explain how Belarusian history, belief, art, warfare or landscape developed in this part of the country, while giving the stop enough substance to stand on its own within a broader journey.

What you will see

  • excavated timber buildings.
  • artefacts from everyday life.
  • preserved street levels.
  • interpretation of medieval Brest.

History

Archaeological excavations exposed timber streets and buildings from the medieval settlement near the confluence of the Bug and Mukhavets rivers; the museum was created to preserve them in place.
