Why visit

Two contrasting chapels, one Romanesque in character and one richly decorated, frame a long-standing Bruges devotion centred on a relic traditionally associated with the blood of Christ. The visit is worthwhile because it brings several strands of Belgian history and landscape together in one clearly legible setting. Time on site can focus on Romanesque lower chapel, upper chapel, reliquary tradition, while the surrounding streets, grounds or scenery provide useful context. It works especially well as part of a regional itinerary because the place adds a distinct subject rather than repeating the experience of nearby attractions.

What you will see

  • Romanesque lower chapel.
  • upper chapel.
  • reliquary tradition.
  • Burg square.

History

The lower chapel dates from the twelfth century, while the upper spaces were repeatedly altered and restored. The relic tradition became deeply embedded in Bruges' religious and civic life.
