Why visit

Boyana Church concentrates an exceptional amount of medieval art and architectural history into a very small building. The 13th-century frescoes are especially important because they preserve detailed portraits, religious scenes and a strong sense of individual human expression. The controlled interior visit contrasts with Sofia’s much larger churches and helps place the medieval Bulgarian state within the wider artistic world of Orthodox Europe.

What you will see

  • The 1259 fresco cycle in the medieval church.
  • Portraits of the church’s patrons and medieval Bulgarian rulers.
  • The compact ensemble of building phases beneath Vitosha.

History

The complex developed in several stages between the Middle Ages and the 19th century. A major cycle of frescoes was painted in 1259, and the church was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979.
