Why visit

The Ancient Theatre makes Plovdiv’s Roman past unusually visible within the living city. Its seating, orchestra and stage architecture can be read as a complete civic performance space rather than isolated archaeological fragments. The hillside location also reveals the relationship between ancient Philippopolis and the later old town. Because the monument remains in cultural use, it demonstrates how archaeology can form part of contemporary urban life rather than existing only inside a museum or fenced excavation.

What you will see

  • The semicircular marble seating and stage building.
  • Views across modern Plovdiv from the old-town hillside.
  • The continued use of the ancient structure for performances.

History

The theatre was constructed in the Roman period, probably in the late 1st or early 2nd century AD, when ancient Philippopolis was an important city in the province of Thrace. It was rediscovered and restored in the 20th century.
