Why visit
Buynovo Gorge complements Trigrad by showing another form of the Rhodopes’ limestone landscape, with the river confined between steep walls and roads adapting closely to the valley. Its proximity to Yagodina Cave makes the link between surface erosion and underground karst especially clear. The gorge is best understood as part of a wider mountain system rather than as a single viewpoint, and conditions on narrow roads can affect the practical visit.
What you will see
- Narrow limestone walls along the river corridor.
- Views into the surrounding karst plateau and forest.
- Close geographical connection with Yagodina Cave and nearby mountain villages.
History
The gorge formed as the Buynovo River incised through limestone, creating a constricted valley connected with the region’s wider cave and karst system. It is part of a protected mountain landscape.
