Why visit

Bacho Kiro Cave is unusual because its archaeological importance is as significant as its geology. The underground passages show the karst processes that shaped the Dryanovo gorge, while excavated remains connect the same space with very early human activity. Visiting the cave beside the monastery creates a particularly wide historical sequence within a small area, from prehistoric occupation through medieval religious life to the revolutionary events of the 19th century.

What you will see

  • Managed cave passages with stalactites and other formations.
  • Archaeological significance connected with prehistoric occupation.
  • Immediate proximity to Dryanovo Monastery and its gorge landscape.

History

The cave formed in limestone and has been used by humans at different prehistoric stages. Archaeological excavations have recovered material that contributes to research on early modern humans in Europe, alongside later occupational evidence.
