Why visit
Pleven Panorama uses a form of historical display very different from a conventional museum. The large circular painting, combined with modelled foreground terrain, places the viewer inside a constructed battlefield scene and makes the scale of the siege easier to grasp. It is especially useful after Shipka because both sites explain different strategic parts of the same war. The museum also illustrates how Bulgaria commemorated 19th-century liberation history during the late 20th century.
What you will see
- The immersive circular battle panorama.
- Three-dimensional terrain and objects merging with the painted scene.
- Exhibits explaining the wider 1877 siege and its military context.
History
The panorama opened in 1977, a century after the siege. Its large circular painting and three-dimensional foreground reconstruct key moments of the fighting around Pleven.
