Why visit

Avakas is one of the clearest places to experience the rugged geology of western Cyprus on foot. The walls tighten around the stream bed, changing the scale of the landscape from open scrub to a confined canyon. Conditions can vary sharply after rain or in extreme heat, so the route is best approached as a natural terrain walk rather than a casual paved attraction.

What you will see

  • Narrow limestone walls.
  • Boulder-strewn gorge floor.
  • Native vegetation.
  • Geological formations.

History

Avakas Gorge was formed by water erosion through limestone over a long geological period. It lies within the wider Akamas landscape, where cliffs, scrub and seasonal watercourses support varied habitats.

Visitor tips

  1. 1

Allow time for the surrounding landscape or historic streets where these form part of the site context.

  2. 2

Check current official information before relying on a particular entrance, service, crossing arrangement or interior visit.
