Why visit

Bellapais combines refined Gothic architecture with a hillside setting that explains why the monastery remains so memorable despite being ruinous. The cloister and refectory preserve enough structure to show the organisation of communal monastic life, while views towards the coast connect the complex with Kyrenia and the Pentadaktylos foothills. The stop works especially well when placed beside nearby sites from the same region, because the contrast in landscape, architecture or historical period makes the wider character of Cyprus easier to understand.

What you will see

  • Gothic church.
  • Cloister.
  • High-vaulted refectory.
  • Views towards the north coast.

History

The abbey developed mainly in the 13th and 14th centuries under Lusignan rule. It was associated with Premonstratensian canons and declined after later political and religious changes.

Visitor tips

  1. 1

Allow time for the surrounding landscape or historic streets where these form part of the site context.

  2. 2

Check current official information before relying on a particular entrance, service, crossing arrangement or interior visit.
