Why visit
The square is the most direct place to understand Tartu’s civic centre and its walkable relationship with the university and river. The eighteenth-century Town Hall, rows of historic buildings and the Kissing Students fountain create a compact urban ensemble rather than a single monument. Cafés and seasonal events change the atmosphere, but the main value is spatial: the square links the university quarter, pedestrian streets and Emajõgi embankment. It makes a practical starting point before visiting the cathedral hill or museums east of the centre.

History
The present Town Hall was completed in the late eighteenth century after earlier fires reshaped central Tartu. The square continued as the administrative and commercial heart of the city through later rebuilding and modernisation.
Visitor tips
- 1
Allow enough time to explore the setting rather than only the principal feature, and follow local signs where routes, protected areas or historic surfaces limit access.
