Why visit

Narva Castle is unusual because its military landscape is defined by a second fortress directly across the river. The walls and Tall Hermann tower make the medieval structure clear, while museum displays explain the city and border region. Views from the Estonian side reveal how narrow the river corridor is and why Narva held strategic importance for centuries. The castle also helps visitors understand the city’s complicated history before walking the modern river promenade, where the two fortresses remain visible from different angles.

What you will see

  • Tall Hermann tower.
  • castle courtyards.
  • views of Ivangorod Fortress.
  • Narva Museum displays.

History

The castle originated in the thirteenth century and was developed under Danish and later Livonian Order control. Across the river, Ivangorod Fortress was founded by Muscovy in the late fifteenth century, creating the distinctive paired-fortress landscape.

Visitor tips

  1. 1

Allow enough time to explore the setting rather than only the principal feature, and follow local signs where routes, protected areas or historic surfaces limit access.
