Why visit

Large and unusually coherent ancient city with a stadium, theatre, sanctuaries and extensive fortifications. Messene was founded in 369 BCE after the Theban victory over Sparta ended long Spartan domination of Messenia. Planned as a major free city, it developed monumental civic and religious buildings whose remains survive across the valley. The visit is strongest when you focus on stadium and gymnasium, asklepieion and arcadian gate.

Visitor tips

  1. 1

Prioritise Stadium and gymnasium if you have less time than the full suggested visit.

  2. 2

Leave enough time for Asklepieion rather than treating Ancient Messene as a quick photo stop.
