Why visit

Monumental marble doorway of an unfinished Archaic temple standing on the islet of Palatia beside Naxos Town. Construction of the huge temple began in the sixth century BCE under the tyrant Lygdamis but was never completed. The surviving doorway became the defining monument of Naxos harbour and preserves the scale of the abandoned project. The visit is strongest when you focus on marble gateway, sunset views and harbour and chora panorama.

Visitor tips

  1. 1

Prioritise Marble gateway if you have less time than the full suggested visit.

  2. 2

Leave enough time for Sunset views rather than treating Portara of Naxos as a quick photo stop.

  3. 3

Check the current island transport or ferry plan before fixing the day around Naxos; seasonal services and final local connections can change.
