Why visit
The Naval Museum explains why Karlskrona was built and how the naval base shaped the city’s economy, technology and architecture. Historic models and shipbuilding material make changing vessel design easier to compare, while larger exhibits and preserved vessels move the story beyond display cases. The waterfront location is especially important because the museum sits within the same maritime landscape as docks, fortifications and naval facilities. It therefore provides essential context before exploring Karlskrona’s wider World Heritage environment. The collection also shows the technical demands of maintaining a navy over several centuries, from construction and navigation to weapons and daily life aboard ship.

History
Karlskrona’s naval collections trace their origins to an 18th-century model chamber used to preserve shipbuilding knowledge. The modern Naval Museum building opened on the waterfront in the late 20th century and continues that long institutional history.
